Recording artist Elvin Bishop immersed himself in the blues at a young age - his latest CD, The Blues Rolls On is pure enjoyment. Twelve retrospective tracks affirm a musician in touch with his roots and optimistic about blues' future. Keen interplay between musicians and singers showcase Elvin's forty plus years of honest blues exploration. The total package is a treat - extensive liner notes provide background on track selections, artist selection, even session notes.
For The Blues Rolls On, Elvin Bishop drives some old classics out of the garage - applies a fresh coat of paint - then invites a few friends to join him for a spin through blues country - a journey blues enthusiasts will want to take again and again. The CD confesses Bishop's love for the genre by gathering together friends, new and old. Zealous contributions from supporting artists provide additional depth and character to the whole.
The Blues Rolls On features fresh takes on classics like Yonder's Wall, featuring Ronnie Baker Brooks and Tommy Castro. Conversation between B.B. King and Elvin introduces listeners to Oliver Perry's Keep A Dollar In Your Pocket. Track 9 revisits Junior Wells' Come On In This House - Bishop's enthusiasm for genuine [grab you by the ears] blues is alive and well. Lucky for us, Elvin enjoys sharing his enthusiasm with others - such as ourselves.

Shemekia Copeland has made an impression on the blues world and delivers the blues with authority - vocals that demand attention. The combination of her vocals and varied material could easily be described as the "Perfect Storm" Copeland refuses to plant her feet in only one aspect of the blues. Showcasing varied intensities, and vocal prowess, Shemekia Copeland fits nicely amongst the ranks of seasoned blues musicians. One is known by the company one keeps - Shemekia Copeland has certainly surrounded herself with good friends and talented musicians.
Shemekia Copeland released her second Alligator Records CD in 2000. Her Wicked effort is what soulful blues was meant to be - grabbing the blues by the vocal cord and never letting go. Wicked's opening song is the rowdy, It's 2 a.m., which eventually lures listeners to the moody, Up On 1-2-5. In a song co-written by her producer and lead guitarist titled Beat Up Guitar, Shemekia also demonstrates remarkable passion for Delta blues. Special guest, and friend, Ruth Brown adds some down-home seasoning on, If He Moves His Lips.
Copeland's newest recording, Never Going Back ... scheduled for release on February 24, 2009

Buddy Guy's "Sweet Tea" was placed on store shelves Tuesday, May 15, 2001. This effort from the well seasoned bluesman has received great reviews. One reviewer called Sweet Tea his best album since the 1967 release, I Left My Blues In San Francisco. I've listened to a few Buddy Guy releases since 1967 and Sweet Tea finds Buddy in the kitchen serving up some of the finest roots-blues I've heard in a long time. Sweet Tea is a must have for anyone that's serious about owning some of the best roots-blues music around. - Mark D McKinley [Mark's Online Music Source]

The Insomniacs - At Least I'm Not With You (2009) - CD review: Meet The Insomniacs-- a young blues band that's keeping swing style blues burning with a spirited mix of tunes-- thirteen tracks include seven inspired originals written by vocalist and guitarist Vyasa Dodson. The Insomniacs' attitude is best described by the title track, At Least I'm Not With You... presenting their swing brand of blues with an upbeat, let's have some fun along the way attitude-- enabling audiences and listeners to forget about life's suitcase of negatives. Also noteworthy is The Insomniacs cover of Amos Blakemore's Hoodoo Man Blues-- delivered in fine form, the band gives guest harmonica player Al Blake generous space to shine. Dodson's Description Blues is a slow, moody, composition with subtle guitar inflections, and highlights band member Alex Shakeri on Hammond B-3 organ. The Insomniacs take a refreshing stroll across familiar terrain... serving up some fine blues in the process.

Bluez offers some well crafted originals performed with seasoned blues tradition. Jones' guitar work and vocals offer variety -- singing with a smoothness similiar to artists like Robert Cray. At Da' Crossroads allows Jones to reach a bit deeper -- delivering a vocal style more aligned with the soulful delivery of Buddy Guy. (c) 2004 Mark's Online Music Source

* Big Wide Grin takes a detour from the blues, providing listeners
a collection of cover songs - some with intriguing new arrangements.
Kevin Moore, a.k.a., Keb' Mo', traveled and performed with various bands and blues artists through the years, refining his talents and embracing a love for the blues. In 1980, the relatively unknown blues singer and musician released a solo album called, Rainmaker. As with many of the more famous blues musicians, Kevin's name eventually underwent a transformation and Moore respectfully became known as Keb' Mo'.
I walked into a music store one afternoon in 1994 ... Keb' had just released his second solo effort simply titled Keb' Mo'. I bought the CD and also received a complimentary four song EP titled, A Little Mo'. The limited edition EP accompanied the first shipments of that 1994 release. It wasn't long before blues lovers around the country began taking note of Keb's music. Soon, success had not only found it's way to Moore's doorstep ... success even rang the doorbell.

John Primer is the real deal when it comes to boogie flavored blues. Primer's blend of blues is upbeat and performed with enthusiasm whether on stage or in the studio. His backing musicians, The Real Deal Blues Band, provide solid rhythm behind Primer's vocals and lead guitar. Band member Matthew Skoller's harmonica contributions are certainly worthy of special mention.

The Randy Oxford Band's interplay between vocals, trombone and guitars is unique, invigorating and invites repeated listenings. Their musicianship, vocals, and choice of selections combine to create a notable edition to your music library. By incorporating the trombone as one of the lead instruments Oxford has given the band a distinct and original sound. Induction into Washington State Blues Society's Hall of Fame in 2002 is one of several blues awards presented to Trombonist Randy Oxford.
Think, the opening track on All the Buzz is a very good yet undistinguished version that doesn't adequately hint at the gems contained on the CD. The second track is where things begin heating up -- with the first notes of the guitars on Texas Hurricane, it quickly becomes apparent that the Randy Oxford Band is serious about the blues. Virginia Klemens serenades listeners with sultry soulful inspiration on Why Don't You Do Right? and Help Me. The band delivers an amusing rousing romp with the slightly naughty Memphis Minnie hit Bumble Bee. Davidson and Blood contribute impressive guitar leads and rhythms throughout the CD, complimenting Stubbelfield's solid bass lines and Hudson's tight drumming. Oxford jumps into the driver's seat providing resonant trombone leads on several tunes including Moscow Blues and Darkerside of the Sun.

In April 2009, Roy Rogers released his first studio album in seven years with The Delta Rhythm Kings. The material on Split Decision is solid and diverse-- offering the listener new twists through creative arrangements and a strong rhythm section. Through the years the journeyman musician/singer/composer/producer has developed a slide guitar technique that executes a ferocious attack on the fretboard. Rogers' guitar prowess is demonstrated with skill and timing that unleases fierce slide work when the music demands attention. However, the master musician is quite comfortable performing slow ballads delivered with mellow finesse. Rogers is high energy and brilliant onstage... his slide work and finger-picking is astounding. Make plans to attend a live performance to fully appreciate this gifted artist.

The Stella Vees are a powerhouse blues quartet drenched in tradition and shakin' things up with their debut release, Come Round Baby. The four bluesmen deliver real deal Chicago-style blues that's simmered in restraint, steeped in tradition, and seasoned to perfection. Their collective sound is well-crafted around the belief that less is more and pays homage to blues greats that came before them. Lockwood and band have a genuine understanding of what blues music is all about and how it should be played.
Come Round Baby features 14 tracks, including seven originals written by The Stella Vees' guitarist and vocalist Jason "Juke" Lockwood, plus two notable bonus [basement recording] tracks. Lockwood's vocals are in top form throughout, and his guitar playing is concise, crisp, and earnest. I found each of the seven original compositions noteworthy and high caliber contributions-- in both music and lyrics. Weeping Willow and Lien On My Body could easily become modern day blues classics. If you enjoy your blues delivered with a nostalgic twist that nods to the present, look no further than Come Round Baby for your next blues fix. The Stella Vees are primed and ready to bring the blues to your doorstep. (c) 2010 Mark D McKinley [Mark's Online Music Source]
