"Making the simple complicated is commonplace;
Making the complicated simple, awesomely simple, that's creativity." - Charles Mingus
|
"JAZZ ... It can be Rhapsody in Blue,
It can be smooth moves...
It can be Miles Davis
feeling Kind of Blue;
Whether it's the rough edge
of John Scofield's guitar
or the smooth percussion
of Peter Erskine...
It is what it is ... JAZZ!"
- Mark D McKinley

"It's my sincere wish that the music on this album will touch you and inspire you to do more loving and giving, more baking, visiting and singing this Christmas and in those to come. The greatest gift is the real and everlasting Christmas gift: Jesus Christ, Spirit Devine, proof of God's love for Humankind. To quote my favorite Christmas song-- May the ones you love be near you, that's the happiest Christmas of all." - Alexis Cole
|
with jazz vocalist Alexis Cole
|
The Greatest Gift-- a collection of old and newer favorites that blend elements of jazz and world influences. Alexis Cole provides smooth and commanding vocals to this inspired Christmas release. The CD offers a nice mix of soft jazz styles that intertwine music and vocals with a sense of peace and well-being. Consider, if you will... such a good feeling could easily transfer directly onto the listener.

Music from the Bitches Brew recording sessions aren't for the [faint of heart] in the context of music exploration. These sessions were a provocative exercise in music development. Miles Davis sought to broaden the scope of his ambitions, abilities, compositions, and pushed conventional jazz boundaries. The exercise expressed Miles' passion for jazz and developed a new art form within music - a fusion of musician and music that discovered another dimension within sound, structure, and improvisation. Notice the musicians that joined Miles Davis for this innovative experience and then consider the breadth of their collective and individual works in the years that followed. Miles Davis' Bitches Brew influenced an entire era of fusion-based compositions that redefined one segment of the jazz genre.

There are too many good things to write about this CD - I'll be brief: "Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz" is an extraordinary live recording that moves the listener. Denhert's superb vocals are accompanied by her supporting band of top-notch musicians - NY Unit. "Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz" brings KJ Denhert and band into your home for an intimate concert. The spirit of live sessions recorded in 2007 during her jazz residency in Italy is now available for all to experience.

Sidenote: Due to the enthusiastic response Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz received during pre-release reviews,
there are plans to release "Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz" on vinyl in the coming months.

"Essentially it is a live recording - a moment in time in a dynamic process of discovery. There is something so exciting about recording a song that is new or one that becomes new with the addition of another player. Make no mistake it is a risky kind of recording." - KJ Denhert
"Denhert and Falcon together - art in motion. A masterpiece!"

On stage, the Dan Faehnle Quartet is solid entertainment. Fanehnle's guitar prowess is supported by excellent musicians whose personalities and sense of timing are given generous space to shine during each selection. Faehnle's guitar work implies a rather frantic approach to jazz as he maneuvers the fretboard with confidence, precision and ease. However, Faehnle is equally skilled in the use of restraint when playing the more traditional jazz standards and ballads.

The rhythmic heart of creativity and innovation can be heard resonating above the corporate music labels if you'll pause... and really listen. Artist and composer Philip High is taking music to the next level with the release of his debut CD, HighperTrybe. High has developed an original style, all his own, yet his passion for playing evokes subtle homage to the influences of Scofield, DiMeola, Hedges and Towner. All original compositions range from cerebral atmospheres to jazz inflections combining spontaneous loop samples with textures of world music.
|
The sounds that resonate from his electric nylon string classical guitar create a sophisticated blend of unique fret-work and high tech. High has mastered the allurement of restraint and timing-- each song, pulling the listener into the mood of the composition. Several songs on HyperTrybe would translate into visual images deserving of museum space. The inventive techniques showcased on HyperTrybe range from tastefully incorporated percussion to playing selective strings with a rosined sliver of bamboo. Amongst the many tracks worthy of special mention are... Marine Biology, Ocean to Ocean, Moth and Flame, And the River Flows, Comet Boy, Starlight Reflections, and Wavicles. HighperTrybe deserves your attention. To accurately appreciate the abilities of this talented composer and musician, just buying HyperTrybe may not be enough... visit the Philip High Website and watch for live performance updates on his music calendar.

Kevin Peter Jones offers the listener a fun journey through compositions written by Dave Grusin, Russell Ferrante, Mike Miller, Bela Fleck, and others. Relaxed and confident in his own abilities, drummer Jones never demands the spotlight while providing the rhythmic heartbeat that allow his cohorts to sparkle on every track. The use of such restraint on a personal project serves as testament to Jones' talents, artistry, and appreciation of music. The Bela Fleck and the Flecktones composition, Big Country (West Coast), gives Hislap's bass an opportunity to shine. Ferrante's contributions on the ivories are well documented throughout the recording. Miller's fretwork on Can't We Elope suggests homage to guitarist Wes Montgomery. Along with Marienthal and the rest of the crew, Kevin Peter Jones' Magnetic Journey is an enjoyable listening experience. (c) 2010 Mark D McKinley [Mark's Online Music Source]

Norah Jones captured the hearts of music fans and the music community with her February 26, 2002 debut release Come Away With Me. Norah’s soulful vocals and delicate piano playing suggested a confidence and restraint not usually found in a performer her age. Come Away With Me contains fourteen tracks -- each selection supporting the other. The CD is brilliantly arranged for an attentive listener -- evoking moods of an era when life and music were far less complicated.

Come Away With Me offers refreshing optimism that good music can remain both current and reflective regardless of its decade of origin. It is this blending of old standards and newer originals that invite appreciative, even varied audiences to contemplate further explorations of roots and jazz music. Come Away With Me sparks further enjoyment with each listen. The musicians appearing on Jones' debut effort demonstrate remarkable talent -- providing additional depth, richness, and textures to the recording.
|
Guitarist Jesse Harris composed five of the songs featured on Come Away With Me including Grammy winning Song of the Year, Don’t Know Why. The mellow vibrato guitar accompanied The Long Day is Over, was co-written by Jesse Harris and Norah Jones. Bass player Lee Alexander contributes four note worthy compositions to the recording -- Seven Years, Feelin’ the Same Way, Lonestar and a song co-written with J.C. Hopkins titled Painter Song. Alexander’s songs prove to be custom tailored to Ms Jones' style of delivery. Come Away With Me also features a credible version of the Hoagy Carmichael and Ned Washington standard, The Nearness of You. Norah Jones' intriguing rendition of Hank Williams’ Cold Cold Heart transforms the country classic into a new jazz standard. (c) 2003 Mark's Online Music Source

Invited by the Arsenal in Metz and accompanied on this occasion by the Lorraine National Orchestra, Elisabeth Kontomanou goes back to the great standards that made the history of Jazz. The rythm section and the orchestra brilliantly carry and magnify the captivating voice of the "Great Lady" of Jazz.
In perpetual search to "approach" and to "touch" Jazz, she offers us with this recorded concert sublime and rare instants of music and emotions. An album that will surely stand the test of time.

"I have never touched jazz, nor have I seen it. Only through its echo have I been able to catch sight of it,
but every day of my life, I will try and get closer." - Elisabeth Kontomanou
Of Greek and African origin, singer Elisabeth Kontomanou has worked with musicians on both the European and American scenes: Leon Parker, Ari Hoenig, John Scofield, Jean-Michel Pilc, Michel Legrand, Mike Stern, Jon Hicks (RIP) and Alain Jean-Marie to name a few. She first gained recognition at French 'Concours de La Defense' and was nominated for a Django d'Or Award in 1999.

John McLaughlin embraces composition and innovation like most musicians clutch an instrument. McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra pushed the barriers of comfortable music genres and explored the rock era from a unique jazz fusion perspective. The Inner Mounting Flame was a landmark recording that sparked emotion within the listener... offering something of a deeper experience than the typical mainstream rock and roll of the time.

Terry Silverlight's latest project as a bandleader delivers an assortment of modern jazz through all original compositions. A seasoned roster of guest musicians join Silverlight on Wild!! Collectively, Silverlight's compositions encourage each personality to illuminate -- bringing further depth to the recording. Hiram Bullock's gritty guitar work on Sparky J's puts things in motion for 59 minutes of listening enjoyment. Silverlight showcases his inventive skills early on with a crafty drum intro leading into Pugnacious.
|
Edgar Winter's bouncing vocals on Brown 'N Serve provide a straight forward approach to this ever-evolving jazz recording. Will Lee's smooth bass lines lure the listener to the spaciousness of Windsurfing and Mike Ricchiuti's maneuvering of the ivories suggest a hint of the sun's gleam upon the sails. John Clark and David Mann's horn section effortlessly supports the subtle breeze behind the sails. Chuck Loeb's artistic guitar leads add a stamp of approval to the CD's title track ... Wild!!

I first experienced Tunnels during a live performance of their Natural Selection CD at the Jazz Factory in Louisville, Kentucky. The New York based avant-garde fusion trio is driven by renowned bassist Percy Jones and vibraphone/percussionist Marc Wagnon. Combining their equally impressive artistic backgrounds, Jones and Wagnon transport the fusion of jazz and rock to another dimension--
|
creating imaginative soundscapes that awaken the senses. Tunnels has their own musical vision, suggesting no comparisons, I offer two groups that demonstrate the artistry and force that drives this trio's music -- the days of King Crimson's 21st Century Schizold Man, and also, the heyday of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. For music that moves the listener beyond conventional boundaries... check out Natural Selection.

Rachel Z has secured a place in the jazz community through hard work and dedication to the genre she loves. Influences include Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Joni Mitchell, McCoy Tyner, Chic Corea, and Steely Dan. Rachel Z acquired wisdom from journeymen musicians through studio work and live performances -- intensifying her formal music education. Z has worked with artists such as Wayne Shorter, Mike Manieri, Al DiMeola, Peter Gabriel, Tony Levin, Bobby Rae, and others. The music of Rachel Z is a union of jazz past and jazz present. Her recent arrangements of notable rock classics will ensure a bridge for listeners to jazz future. Rachel Z is reinventing musical wheels by thinking outside conventional boundaries.
