America Pulled Together

On September 11, 2001, the United States of America suffered an act of terrorism that alerted us to our vulnerabilities.  The attacks were massive in their destruction and quick in their delivery.  Logical reasoning of the attacks were beyond immediate comprehension.

Such attacks on American soil made us question our safety.  The images of the initial attacks and consequential events were frightening.  A society based on individual freedoms now felt threatened.  Our hearts were saddened.  Our hearts were angered.

Acts of terrorism are hard to digest because the purpose of such acts are designed to transform everyday life matters into confusion, horror, and doubt.  Terrorists execute deeds so unwarranted and frightening that victims take pause in terror.

We may never be able to intercept each and every plot of terror that a warped mind can plan.  When someone is that extreme in their twisted logic and their determination to make a statement, they will occasionally succeed.  The persons responsible for the despicable attacks on The United States of America were robotic in mindset to the end.

The September 11th attacks occurred on American soil, but every nation has times of grief, sorrow, suffering, and frustrations. America was the target of these attacks, yet people from 63 other countries were among the casualties.  An alliance of mutual anger is forming and the time has come to identify and remove the cloak that masks a network of terrorists.

The United States of America is more than just a symbolic name that was chosen for our country.  The very attacks that tore our hearts apart will also pull us closer together as a nation united.

We will not run.   We will not hide.   We will not be defeated.

America sometimes plays political games within its own borders and we often challenge one another's thinking, but at the core of the American spirit is a foundation of love for our fellow man and a love for our country.  We're Americans first.  We're Republicans, Democrats, and Independents second.

Undeniably, we suffered a great blow to our way of thinking and to our ideals of a free nation, but we will heal as a unified nation.  We'll be even stronger as a people and even stronger as a nation.  We will keep our freedoms intact.  We will continue to move forward as our founding fathers intended when they laid the ground work over two hundred years ago.

Our people are the strength that weaves the fabric called America. In times of crisis we are united and provide comfort and aid to one another.

Our government acted swiftly during this crisis by providing aid, comfort, and assurance of resolve.  Terrorists will never again be able to dig themselves deep enough to elude a country that is united.  The citizens of America have offered help to the suffering and have demonstrated compassion that some nations will never understand.

The citizens of America and countries around the world are assisting authorities in finding the persons responsible for these attacks.  America is pulling together in a united sense of patriotism because we are still, the United States of America.  Numerous persons were indirectly and directly involved with these attacks and their whereabouts will be uncovered.

19 robotic minds boarded American planes and intentionally took the lives of innocent people...
People of many races were killed.
People of many beliefs were killed.

Casualties of the September 11, 2001 attacks will not be abandoned.
The victims and their families will always live in our hearts.

No survivors have been located, or rescued, since the 12th of September.

As of October 18, 2001:
...____ people are still missing in New York City.
...____ are confirmed dead in New York City.
...____ have been identified in New York City.
...189 people are believed dead at the Pentagon.
...44 people are confirmed dead after the plane crash in Pennsylvania.

American soil is being turned as we place our loved ones to rest -
Memorial services are held in tribute to the thousands missing;
   ...We will help one another.
   ...We will comfort one another.
...We will shed tears for one another.

New WTC Observation Platform Opens
The Associated Press
Dec 31 2001 7:45AM

NEW YORK (AP) - After three months of peering through gaps in fences and past police barricades, visitors on Sunday got an unobstructed view of the remains of the World Trade Center from a newly built observation platform.

Starting at dawn, hundreds of people stood in a line that snaked for blocks, waiting in freezing temperatures for the 13-foot-high stage to open at 9 a.m.

For some, the view of ground zero was a religious epiphany.
``This is disturbing - but also wonderful. We are Christians, and this teaches us to help and love one another,'' said Shannon Pope of St. Louis, Mo., tears streaming down her cheeks as she clutched her 4-year-old son Collin in her arms.

She had won the visit for herself and 19 relatives in a nationwide family reunion essay contest. The group included her 90-year-old grandmother, Janice Floyd.

``It's unbelievable! It's still smoking!'' Floyd said when she saw the devastation.
The platform, accessed by a long wooden ramp, can hold between 300 to 400 people. It is big enough across the front for about a dozen people at a time to stand side-by-side to see the huge red cranes and other machinery that have been at work day and night since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The cranes still stop, almost daily, so workers can remove the remains of the dead.
Instead of craning for a view down blocked-off streets, visitors now can get an unobstructed view of the jagged holes in the ground that open into what was once the trade center's underground mall.

``What struck me was the open wide space, no buildings. But it also looks like a construction site,'' said Scott Smith, who drove to New York from West Hartford, Conn., with his 7-year-old daughter, Lane.

The rectangular, fenced-in structure is located on Church Street alongside the cemetery behind historic St. Paul's Church, and within view of City Hall.

The platform was officially opened Saturday by Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who urged people to ``come here and say a little prayer and reflect on the whole history of America.''
Giuliani also added an inscription to one of the wooden railings: ``We will always remember what you did here - you, our heroes - to save America. God bless you.''

The city plans three more observation platforms in the area, but there was no immediate word on when they would be finished.

History was on the mind of Greg Packer, a New Yorker visiting ground zero for the fourth time.

``Each time, it just gets harder and harder,'' he said. ``But there's nothing more important than to see this. This is more important to me than any concert or game that I've ever seen, because this is history.''

A visitor from France, Frederic Hustache of Paris, got up at 6 a.m. to join the line - but the cold drove him into a coffee shop across the street.

``The point is not to actually see everything. It's to feel what is here,'' he said.
Hustache came with a friend, Armand Benezra, who had last visited when the twin towers were intact.

``I still remember New York that way,'' Benezra said. ``This has become a sort of big cemetery. And we are here because of all the people who died. We're here to pay tribute to them.''

Editorial from a Romanian newspaper
(What a different perspective from someone from another country)

How we are seen by at least some others...
An Ode to America

Why are Americans so united? They don't resemble one another even if you paint them! They speak all the languages of the world and form an astonishing mixture of civilizations. Some of them are nearly extinct, others are incompatible with one another, and in matters of religious beliefs, not even God can count how many they are.

Still, the American tragedy turned three hundred million people into a hand put on the heart. Nobody rushed to accuse the White House, the army, the secret services that they are only a bunch of losers. Nobody rushed to empty their bank accounts. Nobody rushed on the streets nearby to gape about. The Americans volunteered to dona! te blood and to give a helping hand. After the first moments of panic, they raised the flag on the smoking ruins, putting on T-shirts, caps and ties in the colors of the national flag. They placed flags on buildings and cars as if in every place and on every car a minister or the president was passing. On every occasion they started singing their traditional song: "God Bless America!".

Silent as a rock, I watched the charity concert broadcast on Saturday once, twice, three times, on different TV channels. There were Clint Eastwood, Willie Nelson, Robert de Niro, Julia Roberts, Cassius Clay, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Springsteen, Silvester Stalone, James Wood, and many others whom no film or producers could ever bring together. The American's solidarity spirit turned them into a choir. Actually, choir is not the word. What you could hear was the heavy artillery of the American soul.

What neither George W. Bush, nor Bill Clinton,! nor Colin Powell could say without facing the risk of stumbling over words and sounds, was being heard in a great and unmistakable way in this charity concert. I don't know how it happened that all this obsessive singing of America didn't sound croaky, nationalist, or ostentatious! It made you green with envy because you weren't able to sing for your country without running the risk of being considered chauvinist, ridiculous, or suspected of who-knows-what mean interests.

I watched the live broadcast and the rerun of its rerun for hours listening to the story of the guy who went down one hundred floors with a woman in a wheelchair without knowing who she was, or of the Californian hockey player, who fought with the terrorists and prevented the plane from hitting a target that would have killed other hundreds or thousands of people. How on earth were they able to bow before a fellow human?

Imperceptibly, with ever! y word and musical note, the memory of some turned into a modern myth of tragic heroes. And with every phone call, millions and millions of dollars were put in a collection aimed at rewarding not a man or a family, but a spirit which nothing can buy. What on earth can unite the Americans in such a way? Their land? Their galloping history? Their economic power? Money? I tried for hours to find an answer, humming songs and murmuring phrases which risk of sounding like commonplaces. I thought things over, but I reached only one conclusion... Only freedom can work such miracles!
